The 2013 Dakar riders have had a hard time during the Stage 11: rain kept dust and dirt to the ground making visibility no longer a problem for the competitors following in the wake of the front-runners. However, this hasn't made things any easier; in fact the special stage had to be shortened by 30 km, down to 190 km.
Coma's replacement rider, American rookie Kurt Caselli passed his team mate Despres and kept the pace really up, claiming his second Dakar stage victory, almost 5 minutes ahead ofHusqvarna rider Goncalves and 6 and a half minutes faster than Cyril.
Barreda Bort came in 6th , followed very closely by team mate Botturi and Slovakian KTM Jakes. Jakes lost a lot of time due to a navigation error, but managed to find the right track once more and recovered as much as was humanly possible.
The overall standings before Stage 12 see Despres in the first position, leading only 1'30” over Ruben Faria. Lopez is far back with almost 14 minutes, and the gaps get bigger and bigger with the 4th KTM ridden by Jakes and Botturi in 5th.
