BMW has come forth with a number of changes affecting the 5-Series models starting July 2012. Among these is a new multifunctional instrument display that will come as an optional extra on all models except the 520d EfficientDynamics and the ActiveHybrid5.
This instrument cluster is digital and centers around a 10.25-inch display with the latest Black Panel technology. You can use this to show the familiar layout you’d get from an analog 5-Series cluster, but also choose from three settings called COMFORT, ECO PRO and SPORT.
In the ECO PRO mode, the instruments are basically a new version of the ones in an EfficientDynamics display system, encouraging you to drive more efficiently on the road and to save fuel.
In the SPORT mode, the speed is shown in digital numbers and as a rising bar where the speedo was, and the same sort of bar is used for the rev counter, at the center of which sits the selected gear.
