Chrysler has announced that it is recalling 1,689 2012 Jeep Compasses and Patriots because fuel could leak from their tanks, but only in the event of a crash. Still it’s good to know that a problem that could have made a bad crash worse is going to be fixed.
"Some vehicles may have been built with a fuel tank assembly containing a damaged roll-over valve," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "In the event of an impact or roll-over, fuel leakage could occur, increasing the risk of a fire."
The affected cars were built from December 17, 2011 through January 2, 2012. According to the official statement, no deaths or injuries have yet to be reported as a result of this flaw.
To fix the problem, Jeep dealers will replace the tank, with the official call-back to start in June this year. To find out if your Jeep is affected, feel free to contact Chrysler’s through their hotline: 1-800-953-1403.
