2010 Chevrolet New Sail Launched

While all eyes are focused on the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, General Motors rolled out in China the 2010 Chevrolet New Sail sedan, the first passenger car created in China by a joint venture. Developed by Shanghai GM and the the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), the New Sail will also be sold in other emerging markets, according to an official statement.

The car will be sold in five versions, with pricing to start at $8,800. The range will include two engines, 1.2-liter S-TEC II and 1.4-liter S-TEC III. If we are to trust the official figures, the 1.2-liter achieves a fuel consumption rating of 5.7 l/100km (41.2 mpg) while the 1.4-liter reaches 5.9 l/100km (39.8 mpg).

As for performance, the 1.2-liter unit pushes the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.9 seconds while the 1.4-liter does the same in 11.9 seconds.

"Our mission has always been to enable more individuals and families to realize their dream of owning a car,"
said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group.

"With the New Sail, we are setting a new standard for the lower-end small car segment while fully living up to the global standards of Chevrolet, one of the world's leading vehicle brands. The fact that the New Sail will be exported is a testament to the capabilities of our product development organization in China."

In terms of safety, Chevrolet expects the car to earn four stars in China New Car Assessment Program, boasting features such as safety cage construction with crumple zones, steel frame surrounding the fuel tanks, dual airbags in front, a retractable steering column, antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, child safety locks and a stronger child seat.

There will be six colors available: Crescent Silver, Jasmine White, Sky Blue, Coral Red, Amber Orange and Starfish Blue.
