If you’re running particularly low on faith in the goodness of mankind today, here’s a video that might help with that: over 20 people rushed to save 3 people trapped in a wrecked car.
The crash happened in Newport Beach, California, The OC Register reports. No possible cause for the crash has been made public, but one thing is certain: the vehicle smashed into a tree in the median and all 3 passengers inside became trapped. The car itself was mid-suspended in the air, and this is where by-standers’ intervention helped.
The ran to the car and struggled to get it back on all 4 wheels and, after pushing and screaming, were able to do just that. As for their attempt to remove the victims from the car, it failed: the publication says that all victims had to be cut from the car by firefighters.
“Firefighters found the vehicle lodged in the median at East Coast Highway and Narcissus Avenue after the 8:22 a.m. crash, Newport Beach Fire Department spokesman Kevin Tiscareno said,” The OC Register writes. “The driver and passengers were trapped inside, Tiscareno said, adding that firefighters had to stabilize the vehicle.”
“The three were reportedly taken to trauma centers to be treated for injuries. Details about what led to the crash were not immediately available,” the publication says.
That said, while the effort on the part of the passers-by is laudable, their attempt at removing the victims is not. In case of severe trauma, civilians are asked not to intervene in moving the victims, lest they do more harm than what’s already been caused in the wreck.
The only situation in which moving a crash victim is considered ok is in case of fire or a threat of an imminent fire / explosion. It’s uncertain if that’s what motivated this large group of people here, but it could be a possibility since you can see smoke coming out of the vehicle.
