Back in 1952, German carmaker Porsche was just beginning to set the cornerstone of what it was to become. And a major part in making the brand what it is today was played by an engineer named Ernst Fuhrmann.
Fuhrmann is the man responsible for the Type 547 engine. Developed in 1952, the powerplant soon evolved into the Type 587 and Type 692 and found its way in the engine bays of cars like the 356 Carrera.

Finding one today on the open market is not an easy task. Many of them are no longer around, while the engines that survived are nicely tucked away inside high-profile classic Porsches. This is why when one pops up, buyers’ interest instantly goes through the roof. And a 1958 Porsche Type 692 Fuhrmann engine, serial number KD-P91030, just did.

The powerplant is listed for sale on Bring a Trailer. There are two days left in the bidding process, and at the time of writing, the highest bid is already at $91,000.

We’re told this particular engine last served a 1959 Carrera GT Speedster. The KD designation in front of the serial number means it was rebuilt, and info shows this process was handled by a specialist back in the mid-1990s.

When work was performed on the engine, it was found it was fitted with racing camshafts and Weber carburetors. It now goes complete with the said hardware, as well as a generator, fan, flywheel, clutch, shrouding, twin Bosch distributors, the whole shebang.

“The Type 692/0 features a roller-bearing crankshaft assembly manufactured by Hirth Motoren GmbH and a redesigned engine case with a removable sump plate. Each cylinder head houses dual over-head camshafts driven via vertical shafts with angular gears,” the posting reads.

There are three people now fighting to get their hands on the engine. We only hope the right one lands it in their garage, and some incredible Porsche project comes to life starting next year.
