1948 Jaguar Drophead Coupe Goes Under the Hammer

Jaguar began to send six-cylinder Mark IV models with left-hand drive to the American market in 1947, vehicles that have gained strong popularity among customers who were impressed by the vehicles’ ample power and torque.Of the 4,420 3.5-liter Mark IVs produced in total by Jaguar, only 560 were Drophead Coupes. In addition, only 376 3.5-liter Mark IVs were built for export.

Now, one of 376 3.5-liter Mark IVs built for the export market is set to be auctioned at Amelia Island on March 12 by RM Auctions. Estimated at $110,000-$125,000, the vehicle in question has received a concours-quality restoration, which has been completed in 2000.

Technical wise, the car comes equipped with a 125 hp, 3,485 cc OHV inline six-cylinder engine, dual SU side-draft carburetors, Moss four-speed manual gearbox, solid front axle and live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and Girling four-wheel mechanical drum brakes.

“This left-hand drive, U.S.-delivery Mark IV DHC was originally sold in California and remains in near concours-quality condition, having benefited from a restoration that was completed in 2000,” a statement from RM Auctions reads.

“Visually stunning in burgundy and black, this Mark IV is accented by a black three-position top with landau irons, chrome wire wheels, whitewall tires, brilliant interior woodwork and more. Desirable period features included “flip up” trafficators and rare Lucas road lamps, as well as a complete tool kit mounted within the boot lid. Offered today with very little road use since restoration, this CCCA Full Classic Mark IV DHC is simply superb,”
the statement further adds.
