Audi’s R8 e-Tron, while not being a particularly good performance machine, setting a time of 8:09, it is nevertheless a great achievement for the world of EVs, as it seems to be a genuinely exciting and rewarding machine to thrash about - similar to this EV M3, in that respect.
One of the reasons for this, is the fact that its 306 hp and huge torque figure are to the rear wheels only, and the driver, Markus Winkelhock almost crashed at one point, early in the run. Also, despite the lack of engine noise, we say this is still an excellent way to get around a track, and once batteries become smaller, while holding more juice, then the electric engine will have no rival on the track, as well as on the road.
Audi has definitely learnt a lot from the R8 e-Tron, and this will hopefully show in the company’s future all-electric efforts. This, along with the electric A3s which have been given to employees in the US for personal use will give Audi as much feedback as any manufacturer would want - few manufacturers have the kind of technical and technological resources that Audi has access to.
