The ST series was a sport-touring range of motorcycles manufactured from 1997 to 2007, comprising five distinct models, the ST2, ST4, ST4S, ST3, and ST3S, manufactured in that exact order.

The first model in the family was the Ducati ST2, released in 1997 in the European market and in 1998 in the US market. The second model was the ST4, produced between 1999 and 2005 and powered by a retuned engine version of the Ducati 916 model.

The third model in the range was the Ducati ST4S, launched in 2001, which was a standard ST4 model with an improved suspension system and a slightly larger engine, followed by the Ducati ST3 model in 2004.

In 2004, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer launched the Ducati ST3, a sport-touring machine that replaced the ST2 and ST4 models. The ST3 was powered by a three-valve Desmotre engine with less maintenance than the ST4S model.

The 2004 Ducati ST3 came in a similar package as its predecessors, featuring a full fairing, a single-headlight unit, a windscreen, a single-piece dual seat with a passenger handle, a dual exhaust system with a silencer on each side, a dual-sided swingarm, and three-spoke lightweight alloy wheels.

In the performance department, the 2004 Ducati ST3 had its soul brought to life by a 944 cc four-stroke liquid-cooled V-twin engine, with pistons fed by an electronically controlled fuel injection system, boasting 83 hp at 8,500 rpm and 84 Nm (62 lb-ft) torque at 6,500 rpm.
