The convertible version of the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been in production for no less than 34 years, having attracted its fair share of both fans and detractors. Unfortunately, the fans will no longer be able to purchase a new G-Class Cabriolet model starting with right about... now.
One of our very own Mercedes-Benz insiders has just confirmed for us that the entire production of the Final Edition 200 model has been allocated, meaning that you will no longer be able to order one.
In case it wasn't obvious enough from the name, the Final Edition 200 G-Class Cabrio is the final edition of the model, with a limited run of just 200 units.
Only available as a G 500 version, with a 5.5-liter normally aspirated V8 that delivered 388 hp and 540 Nm (398 lb ft), it was the last remaining bastion of open-top driving in the G-Class model range, which will now consist of the long-wheel base five door model exclusively.
Gelandewagen fans in general should rest assured for now, though, because the “regular” five-door G-Class will remain in production at least until 2015, with the looney 6x6 special edition of the G 63 AMG to be seen on (and off) the roads from January 2014. If you're good and eat all your vegetables you will also be able to read our very own G-Class Cabriolet test drive on Thursday, so stay tuned.
Later edit: the test drive is now live.
