BAIC introduced the BJ60 in 2023, and it was a vehicle that continued the carmaker’s tradition into the off-road industry, creating yet another large body-on-frame SUV.

Beijing Automotive was known for its long experience in producing off-road vehicles. The Chinese car manufacturer launched its first 4x4 car in 1966, the BJ212. After it gained more experience, in 1983, it partnered with American Motors Corporation, which owned the Jeep brand, and learned how to create better SUVs. The BJ60 was introduced in 2023, and it was aimed at customers who wanted a large-sized 4x4 that was able to carry up to five passengers in comfort over long distances. Thanks to its body-on-frame construction and its off-road-oriented technology, the BJ60 could tackle difficult areas where most crossovers could get stuck.

While the vehicle’s overall design resembled the one from a Toyota Land Cruiser, its front fascia resembled the seven-slat grille from Jeep. However, the automaker used three illuminated U-shaped elements on the front fascia between the rectangular headlights. The corner-mounted turn signals were swept back and narrowed towards their rear ends. Lower, on the bumper, the automaker installed a pair of LED fog lamps on a cross-beam section, while underneath, a metallic skid plate was installed to protect the engine bay.

From its profile, the tall stance and the upright panels created a demanding look on the road. BAIC installed enlarged wheel fenders both front and back. Depending on the grade and option, customers could order the vehicle with side steps that helped the ingress and egress for passengers. An additional set of turn signals was installed in the door mirrors, which, together with the chromed trims around the window line, complemented the luxurious look of the BJ60. Finally, at the back, a side-hinged tailgate could be opened to access the large trunk space.

Inside, the automaker welcomed its customers with a cabin combining classic off-road vehicle elements with new technologies. The driver fronted a TFT display mounted inside the instrument cluster. Atop the center stack, BAIC installed a 12.8-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system that controlled most of the car’s features. In addition, between the high-mounted seats on the center console, the automaker placed the rotary dial for the nine driving modes of the SUV. In the back, passengers could sit on the split-folding (40/20/40) bench seat with enough legroom and headroom. The automaker considered installing vents on the ceiling and on the center console’s ending, with independent adjustments from the front cabin area. A third row of seats was on the options list.

Under the hood, BAIC installed a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The part-time 4x4 system sent the power to the rear wheels in normal driving modes. If needed, the driver could engage the front axle as well. Furthermore, the automaker installed three locking differentials for the car. The car boasted a 21.5 cm (8.5-inch) ground clearance. Its approach and departure angles were 30.7 and 26 degrees, respectively, while the break-over ramp angle could reach 25 degrees, depending on the options.
