Back in the 80s, when the E30 3 Series was the car to own, one BMW worker thought it could be better. Max Reisbock was his name and he will always be remembered as the guy who invented the Touring 3 Series.
Back in 1984, Max was a family man with a daughter that was only starting to learn how to ride her tricycle. Working at BMW, he owned an E30 3 Series sedan that was simply too small for his entire family and luggage, every time he went for long drives.
Seeing that this is a problem he encountered every holiday, he decided to create a bigger, roomier car for his own personal use. Using a friend's garage, and limiting himself to a budged of $14,000, he set of to create what we all would get to know as the 3 Series Touring.
Basically, the only thing he did was to move the C-Pillar towards the end of the car and then fill the gap with spare parts. The end result was more practical than the Sedan version and looked good enough to share with his friends.
At first, Max showed his creation only to his friends that encouraged him to take it to the BMW Board because that was a pretty good car, and it would've been a shame to keep it a secret. The Board of BMW took over Max's idea and, 3 years later, in 1987 the 3 Series Touring was introduced to the world, writing a new chapter in the brand's history.
