Snooping around the internet can reveal a lot of interesting info, especially if you know where to look. The guys from Bimmertoday were wondering whether the rumored hybrid X5 will eventually go into production and went looking for new information on the matter.
Therefore, they ended up on the BMW website, where the badges for the F15 X5 model are available. Little did they know that they’d stumble upon: a brand new model, dubbed xDrive40e that can’t possibly be anything else than a hybrid (hence the ‘e’ in the name).

As usual in recent years, the 40 denomination doesn’t tell anything about the displacement of the engine that will be used but it’s rather an indicator of the performance the car will have. Bimmertoday reports that the car will have a combined power output of 272 HP coming from a 2-liter petrol turbocharged engine and a 93 HP electric motor. No word on the torque yet.

The numbers seem accurate, as I’m guessing the conventional engine will be the B48 unit used on the MINI Cooper S, with 192 HP and 300 Nm of torque. The electric unit will be developed using the eDrive technology from the i3 and will allow the car to cover up to 20 miles in electric mode only, as stated by BMW before.

The same powertrain is expected to find its way on the upcoming BMW 740e, another hybrid offering from Bavaria. Production of the xDrive40e X5 is expected to start later this year.
