Spyshots: Volkswagen Beetle R
But what is it going to be like this R version of the Beetle. It's a bit of a head scratcher. It's being suggested that it will get the same 300 horsepower engine as the new Golf R, but I'm not 100% sure of that, as cool as it might sound.
The Beetle is based on the Golf 6 and I've heard the floor pan is almost the same. It hasn't not been adapted for a 4Motion version, which it should have if it's going to take the the Golf R and Audi S3's new engine.
Another solution would be to make it front-wheel drive, basically identical to the Scirocco R, which some say is more fun to drive than the all-wheel drive Golf. As a Vdub fan, I'd say this is the most likely scenario, since adapting the Beetle platform for a new 300 hp engine or 4Motion would be unjustifiably expensive. They've also proven unwilling to make any car that's as fast as the Golf R in the past, since it's a performance flagship of sorts.
Leaving speculation aside, VW is going to try and make a 6 or sub-6 second car. Leaving speculation aside, the test mule is really cool. It has frozen gray paint (or a wrap), black R wheels (probably 19-inch) and the R line body kit.
