NHTSA's Investigation on Takata Faulty Airbags Expanding to More Automakers

Last year, Takata, which is one of the world's biggest safety equipment supplier, discovered that a huge batch of its airbags could deploy incorrectly. And so, the biggest recall over airbag issues started in April 2013. However, it seem that not all of the over 7 million vehicles involved have been successfully repaired.
A few days ago, Toyota found out that the defective airbag serial number list provided by Takata is incomplete. So there are more cars with defective airbags still roaming around the world, with drivers having no idea that in case of a crash, the inflators could actually rupture and cause them injuries.

Toyota announced to recall again around 700,000 vehicles made between 2002 – 2004, including the Lexus SC, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia and Tundra.

But that appears to be just the tip of the iceberg. With the problem resurfacing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is opening a preliminary evaluation investigation for around 1.1 million vehicles made by Chrysler, Honda, Mazda and Nissan along with the ones already reported by Toyota.

NHTSA's investigation is still at the beginning, with the institution still determining how widespread the problem is. On the other hand, Toyota already said to conduct a recall over the models above and replace the airbags if found to be defective.

Unfortunately, the automaker has not yet provided a schedule for the recall. In the meantime, owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 and GM (for the Pontiac Vibe) at 1-800-521-7300 .
