Next Volkswagen Passat Coming in 2014 with New Bi-Turbo TDI Engine
text size: A- A+
The vehicle will be a tad larger than the current generation and while the sedan and the estate will keep their identity, the CC model will be moved upmarket, being slotted between the Passat and the Phaeton, with the carmaker expected to also introduce coupe and convertible versions.
As for the tech goodies that will hide under the hood, VW is believed to be developing a new biTDI (bi-turbo TDI) diesel that should offer at least 200 hp. Another important novelty should be a plug-in hybrid version using a 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol unit and an electric motor, with its combined output sitting at 170 hp and its electric-only range at 50 km (31 miles). VW should also offer turbocharged petrol units (TSIs) with displacements of 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0 liters, with outputs ranging between 130 and 250 hp.

Really would like to see a 200hp, 300 lb. ft. torque in the new Passat, hopefully they will get both transmissions right for the diesel as that has been a problem in the past. We will be purchasing a 2015 regardless however as is the right car, hopefully the price will be around $32,000 in Canada. We have owned Audi, BMW and Volkswagen and despite the 2 BMW's currently in our garage, run flat tires, lack of dipstick and knowledge of catastrophic engine failures in 3 series has us back to VW soon.

I dislike the current Passat offered in Europe as I think it actually looks quite dated already and abit too 'boxy' for my liking - Basically I think it's a poor design, and looks too similar to mk5.
I can't understand why VW Europe (or at least VW UK) didn't opt to make the US model available in Europe as it looks so much better and more modern looking....or even better go with their model from the start, and have one universal model. It's not often you can say that the US model is a better looking car but in this case it is.
VW should replace the current European model with the current US model until say 2017 - when another generation is introduced. Persisting with the current European model for another 2 yrs will only leave VW further behind Ford, Vauxhall, Audi and BMW.
