If we didn't know better, we'd think Porsche has decided to troll us with its latest 911 prototype, such is the oddity of machine, which has recently been spied in the proximity of the Nurburgring.
We're all expecting the new GT2 (here are the most recent spyshots, which seem legit) to show up, but we can only guess this is what's hiding under all the complex aero seen here. For one thing, it looks like we're dealing with a GT3 RS body, hence the front wing aer extractors and the intakes on the rear wings.
Nevertheless, the more extreme aero bits appear to be lifted straight off the GT3 R racecar, albeit from two different generations. While the pair of front winglets resemble those on the 2013 GT3 R (belonging to the 997.2 generation), the generously-sized rear wing reminds us of the 2016 911 GT3 R, which is basically the track version of the 991 GT3 RS.
Feeling confused yet? That was probably the point. While Zuffenhausen engineers are obviously testing the effect of extreme downforce, the aero mashup works better than any camo when it comes to concealing the engineers' intentions.
Speaking of which, we'll remind you Porsche's GT2 badge means a more muscular Turbo that loses its AWD as part of a diet, so we're looking at an RWD, rear-engined coupe with anywhere between 600 and 700 horses.
Not that the spied vehicle (helmet tip to passiondriving for the pics) would be completely free of camouflage - notice the taillights are covered, as if this was a 991.2 model.
Interestingly, the spotted prototype was accompanied by a 991.1 GT3. Now, if we consider the rear lights mentioned above and the fact that the "standard" GT3 is awaiting replacement (the 991 GT3 has been off the Porsche website for a few months now), we could even be dealing with the 991.2 GT3 prototype here. You know, the one that will inherit the 911 R's six-speed stick shift.
Regardless of which version is true (the side exhaust layout should favor the GT2), we should find out enough details to quench our GT division thirst by the end of the year.
