Our men with long camera lenses have managed to capture shots of two brand new GLC pre-protection models as they were being unloaded onto a truck. We've been checking their progress for over a year and we're glad to say the new SUV is an absolute stunner, at least compared to the Audi Q5 with which it competes.
According to the new Mercedes-Benz naming scheme, the GLC is now their entry-level luxury SUV, replacing the GLK in the process. The model has been designed around the same platform as the W205 C-Class and will feature a similar range of powertrains, including the latest plug-in hybrid systems that may prove popular with Chinese customers.
But let's not miss the opportunity provided by these photos and talk about the fantastic styling of the GLC-Class. At the front, it's similar to the new C-Class, which in turn took its inspiration from the S-Class. But the big surprise is the shape of the D-pillar, which has the esthetics of a shooting brake.
We're pretty sure that the white GLC prototype sits lower and could be the 450 AMG Sport model, powered by a twin-turbo 3-liter V6 that makes 367 horsepower. It also comes with dual exhaust, a spoiler for the trunk and other sexy trim pieces. Mercedes' aim with this model will be to battle the Audi SQ5 and we believe they will do so very.
Oven the more basic GLC models that are equipped with 2.1-liter diesel engines, for example, will be available with an AMG-look cosmetic package. If you take off the badges, only a true connoisseur will be able to tell the difference, as is the case with the new GLE Coupe launched at the Detroit Auto Show.
Of course, there are other reasons to get excited about the GLC, more practical ones, in fact. For instance, it should be available with the Airmatic suspension system from the W205 C-Class. The interior will also be much larger, as will the trunk space of the car.
