The 1-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine powering the outgoing Toyota Aygo generation was recognized for its fuel economy, responsiveness and low running costs. And now it just got better.
Coming this summer, the second-generation Toyota Aygo will be fitted as standard with the automaker’s newly upgraded 1-liter gasoline unit, which now provides a maximum thermal efficiency of 37 percent. And this sits just 1% bellow Toyota’s other improved 1.3-liter unit that converts gasoline into wheel motion with 38 percent efficiency - top of the industry score at the moment.
This means that the new Aygo won’t be just fun to drive, but it will also provide a 30 percent lower fuel consumption than the current generation, using the start-stop and other systems.
The improvement has been achieved by using a new-shape intake port and piston profile that create a strong tumble flow to equally distribute the air-fuel mixture and burn it better.
It’s compression has also been increased so the fuel will burn even faster, while a cooled cylinder-head-integrated exhaust manifold takes care of the higher temperatures. Lower-friction piston rings along with a smaller oil pump will also lower internal friction.
Preliminary tests have resulted in an estimated combined fuel consumption of 4.1 l/100 km (57.2 mpg US / 68.8 mpg UK).
The new Aygo will be the first Toyota vehicle to house the new thermal-efficiency unit, but the automaker says this will be extended to 15 other models in the range.
