Instead of just simply importing the i20 into Brazil, Hyundai have just unveiled a Brazil-only supermini, around the same size as the i20, called the HB20. It will be manufactured locally, at the new Piracicaba plant, near Sao Paulo, alongside its crossover sibling, the HB20x, at a rate of 150,000 units per year.
The car itself borrows from the entire Hyundai range, in terms of styling, and with the use of the firm’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design, the end result is actually pretty good. The interior, however, looks much simpler than that of the European i20, and even from the pictures, we don`t expect material qualities to be anywhere near those of the Euro car.
Powering the HB20 are two engines: a 1.0-liter unit and a 1.6-liter unit, with the latter developing 128 hp, driving the front wheels via a five-cog manual transmission - a four speed automatic will be available as an option for the larger engine. It will go on sale in Brazil next year, and it will cost from around €10,500 for the smaller engine, and the equivalent of €12,000.
