Future Porsche Cayman GT4: Mid-Engined Dream

Earlier today, we discussed Porsche’s hybridized, exuberant 2017 plan and we’re here to focus on a particular aspect. The upcoming uber-Cayman, a mid-engined delight that tentatively named Cayman GT4.
According to a Motor Trend story, Porsche is ready to give us the not supercar-priced but still mid-engined go-fast machine we’ve always dreamed about. The model will throw a superior look to the Cayman GTS moniker that recently joined the range as its top.

With an expected price of around $125,000, this will be one expensive Cayman, but it will still be easier to acquire than a 911 GT3, for instance. In a similar fashion to the GT3, this will come with a PDK gearbox - a manual will most likely be skipped, despite the maximum driving dedication of the model.

Speaking of the 911, some could say that a Cayman GT4 would seriously threaten Porsche’s rear-engined coupe. Still, if everything goes as reportedly planned, the 911 will have moved into the 700 hp territory by then, so we don’t think it will be too bothered.

As for what will be at the center of the car, the only things that seems certain is the hybrid power. We expect Porsche to gift the car with the four-cylinder boxer engine they have previously confirmed to be working on.

The turbo flat four seems more likely to power the Cayman GT4 than the usual flat six. After all, let’s not forget that Porsche is returning to LeMans this year with the 919 Hybrid - the latter also uses a four-banger, but, to wrap everything in its engineering magic, Porsche has built this as a V4.

Oh and by the way, do not expect this tech story to remain without an echo for the Boxster. By the way, here are some spyshots of the Boxster testing the future turbo flat four, albeit with the engine is what is probably an inferior state of tune than the one we’ll see on the top tier Cayman.
