Ecclestone: Alonso Is the Best in the World Right Now

Alonso at Ferrari? It seems that more and more people are keeping their fingers crossed for such a move to happen in the near future. And F1 supreme Bernie Ecclestone could not stay aside from expressing his personal view on the matter.

After praising young Lewis Hamilton for his incredible performance last season and tipping him with the chance to become the next Michael Schumacher, the Englishman made an 180 degree turn and named Alonso “the fastest man in Formula 1 at the moment”.

When asked about the possibility of Alonso and the Scuderia joining forces in 2011 – or even 2010 – Ecclestone argued that such a move would be inevitable and that it could only benefit both parts.

“Fernando is probably the best in the world right now, and I would be very pleased if it happened. I think he's faster than Lewis, Felipe and everyone else,” commented Ecclestone for Italian broadcaster Sky TV.

Ecclestone is believed to join the Scuderia at their International Ski Meeting – also known as the 'Wrooom' media event – later this week. Stefano Domenicali, the Ferrari team principal, also left the door open for a future signing of the two-time world champion following a questions&answers exchange with the Italian media earlier today.

“We must concentrate on the present. Fernando is a great driver but we are happy with our two. It is difficult to add anything new on this subject. Our drivers are under contract and we are happy with them. In the future, who knows?” said Domenicali.
