Cadillac ELR Sales Double In July

The Cadillac ELR was never intended to set sales records, but slow sales in the car’s short lifespan have led to a massive pileup vehicle inventory for dealers. Things might be looking up for the range-extended electric luxury coupe, however, as July saw sales almost double from June’s totals giving Cadillac its first 100+ sales month for the ELR since it was introduced late last year.
Last month, Cadillac managed to move 188 ELRs, which is up from the 97 units sold in June and more than triple the 52 units that were sold in May. So far this year, Cadillac has only sold 588 ELR coupes, of which the July sales total accounts for almost a third of that figure.

A key factor in improving sales has definitely been various incentives and dealer discounts that have helped get the price into a more reasonable range. The starting MSRP of the ELR is still listed at $75,995 including destination charges, but an article from The Truth About Cars shows that some dealers have pricing dropping into the low-$50,000 range. At its MSRP, the Cadillac ELR is listed at about the same price as an entry-level Tesla Model S, and it’s also more than double the price of the Chevrolet Volt, which the ELR shares its range-extended electric drivetrain with.

Regardless of how much these incentives played into the car’s sales uptick, Cadillac has been able to cut its dealer inventory of the car by more than half. Earlier in the year, inventory was at an 883-day supply, but at the beginning of last month, that supply had dropped to 396, which is still far from a comfortable number but more palatable nonetheless.
