The manual transmissions have an interesting story in the us: while most Americans prefer the comfort of an automatic, when it comes to performance driving, US customers are more keen that Europeans, which get along fine with stick shifts in everyday cars, to do the shifting themselves.
One company that is listening to the customers’ voice is Buick, which claims that it now offers more manuals than Ferrari. Buick considers that it’s important to give people the alternative of a manual.
“Our strategy has more to do with choices for our customers than anything else,” Phil Colley, from Buick communications, told Autoguide.“There are people who simply prefer a manual transmission, and as we’ve learned with Regal Turbo and GS,” Colley added. “Our customers prefer to have that choice.”
However, Colley wouldn’t comment when asked if the fact that the manual has already been engineered and thus reduce the cost of creating a new model plays a role in the company’s strategy.
We’ll just have to wait and see if Buick, or the market itself, will stick (pun intended) to this strategy on the long run.
