Just a week after its reveal, Volkswagen has announced that it's already taking orders for the new Passat sedan in Germany, which they describe as "the most successful company car in Europe".

Upon hearing the news, we decided to delve into the German market configurator and see what's really on offer and for how much. Mind you, this is a brand new website layout for them and it has a few bugs, the first of which being that prices for the base Trendline and mid-grade Comfortline are the same at €30,375. We have reason to believe this is the sticker for the mid-grade model and that cheaper Passats aren't even available yet, expected to go on sale in a month and cost €25.875.

Volkswagen announced a huge engine range for its new Passat, including a 280 PS 2.0 TSI and a new 1.6 TDI with 120 PS. However, most aren't available yet. Just three engines can be ordered, two of them diesel and one petrol. Of the group a 1.4-liter TSI with active cylinder technology is the cheapest and offers 150 PS. A 2.0-liter TDI diesel with the same power output is also available for €2,200 extra with a manual and another €2,300 on top of that with a six-speed DSG.

In typical German fashion, color choices are limited to grays, silvers and blues, but it's probably what their customers want. Alloy wheel choices are a little bit more diverse, Volkswagen offering 9 different designs and color combinations. According to Volkswagen, the LED headlights which are the Passat's biggest design features are offered as standard on Comfortline and Highline models.

The Price of Amazing

Hiding behind a wall of reasonableness in the new Passat's range is the new flagship diesel engine, the new 2-liter twi-turbo TDI, which is nothing short of amazing. This diesel engine makes 240 PS at 4,000rpm, more than a Golf GTI, and 500 Nm from 1,750rpm of torque. It's available exclusively with 4Motion all-wheel drive and a brand new 7-speed DSG gearbox.

The cheapest you can get this twin-turbo Passat is €43,625, which does sound like a lot. But the recently revealed specs suggest it's worth it. With this engine, the all-new sedan is capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 240 km/h. Think about it: a big sedan that can keep up with the Megane RS and yet requires as little as 4.6 liters per 100 km.
