5 Millionth Toyota Sold in Oz, Sometime, to Someone

In a world where all the minor milestones in the production of any given vehicle is of significant importance for the manufacturer which makes it, Toyota's somewhat blurred announcement of the 5 millionth Toyota being sold in Australia comes as a surprise.

The Japanese carmaker announced in a soft voice that someone, they don't know who, purchased the 5 millionth Toyota sometime in March. It's impossible, they say, to pinpoint exactly who or when bought it. Even more, they don't have any idea what model deserves the title...

“The true significance of five million sales is that such a large number of Australian families, individuals, businesses, organisations and governments have put their faith in Toyota, our vehicles and our dealer network,” David Buttner, Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing said.

“We thank them for their loyalty and we can assure every Toyota customer and prospect that we are constantly striving to improve every aspect of our operations.”

Toyota managed to achieve the feat 41 years after it landed Down Under, in a time were its image is, possibly, at its lowest. The carmaker manufactured locally 2,728,660 vehicles, the rest of the vehicles being imported (at the same time, Toyota is Australia's largest vehicle exporter).

The locally built Camry, the manufacturer's second best selling model, sold 740,000 units, both in the country and in its some 20 export markets. The number one model in Toyota's lineup is the Corolla, which sold 1.1 million vehicles, about 20 percent of the entire Toyota volume.
