3 More Harley-Davidson Bikes to Be Made in India
Prakash was asked by PTI whether Harley-Davidson plans to build all the current models in India, but he denied this rumor: "It is not possible for a long time to come. Our flagship 'Touring Family' has its own heritage, we want to maintain it and moreover the market for it hasn't developed yet here in India."
Building these 3 new bikes locally will drive the retail prices down, offering more affordable motorcyles for the emerging market. For example, the India-built Fat Boy will be available for $27,245 (€20,860) instead of $35,565 (€27,230), the Fat Boy Special will be $28,525 (€21,840) instead of $36,020 (€27,580), while the Heritage Softwail Classic will come with a $29,715 (€22,750) price tag versus the $37,390 (€28,630), all prices ex-showroom Delhi (local versus imported bikes).
While the prices seem huge, we should also add that the Indian import duties for bikes over 800cc are 75%, with a proposed reduction to 60%.
