While the current GT3 RS flavor of the Porsche 911 still turns heads as if the track special just debuted in all its Java Orange splendor, Zuffenhausen engineers are already out there working on the revamped incarnation of the Rennsport machine.
The 991.2 mid-cycle refresh will bring significant changes to the hardcore Neunelfer and it all starts at the back of the supercar. This is where the GT3 RS' flat-six sees its displacement jumping 0.2 liters to 4.2 liters, a move that should increase the output by some 25 hp.

In the transmission department, the tech details are still a mystery - while Porsche has confirmed clutches will make a comeback in its high-velocity models, it's too early to tell whether the GT3 RS will be detoured from its ultimate lap time goal and feature an optional manual, as it is probably the case with the 991.2 911 GT3.

The 911 GT3 RS 4.2 is still in the early stages of development, so the spied prototype has all the important details covered in camo. Up front, the fascia gets thirstier air intakes, while the rear of the machine holds even more changes.

From the engine cover, to the apron and the exhaust layout, which sees the tailpipes migrating from the center of the car to the sides, the new bits and pieces can be guessed through the camouflage.

Nevertheless, the most important change is the addition of a massive rear diffuser that sees the GT3 RS following the footsteps of the 911 R - the RS we currently get feels like a major step forward compared to the "standard" GT3 thanks to its hefty aero package, so just imagine what the newcomer will be able to deliver once the generously-sized wing meets the diffuser.

The Germans should introduce the 911 GT3 RS 4.2 next year as a 2017 model, but if you're in the market for one of these circuit-friendly beasts, you'd better have a chat with your dealer ASAP.

You see, Porsche's GT arm only delivers some 2,000 GT3 RS units per year and by the time the new one is launched, the production for 2017 might be sold out.

If the tech changes mentioned above sound familiar, it might have something to do with the 2016 Rur RGT we met during this year's Geneva Motor Show. The German company, which crossed the border between a tuner and a manufacturer, bored out the Mezger 4.0-liter unit of the 997 GT3 RS, while also offering the machine in manual-only trim - the senior engine was chosen due to its tuner-friendly mechanical side, as opposed to the electronic-heavy of the new 4.0 used by the 991 GT3 RS.

The similarities make us wonder whether Porsche's 4.2 will use 345-section rear rubber as the Ruf contraption does. Then again, we have plenty of time to get an answer before the car arrives.
