When the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and Touring models (the facelifts) were launched earlier this year, we found it rather peculiar that there was no mention of the Gran Turismo models as well. Back then, it felt as if the Germans were particularly interested in leaving the nameplate out of their press releases and that prompted us to doubt the future of the GT.
As it turns out, we were wrong to assume that it was heading to its demise, as the first spyshots of the facelifted 3 Series GT have been sent to our office this morning. Yes, all those who loved this hybrid are to rejoice at the sight of these photos.

As expected, the car won’t receive big design changes. They will be focused mainly on technology and some slight design upgrades. Up front, you should expect the same face as on the 3 Series Sedan, while the taillights should have a new shape, one that uses LED lighting for a change.

Those are also the only covered-up areas on the spied prototypes and there’s no reason to believe that there will be more happening than this. As for the technology front, well, there’s a bit more to talk about.

As you can see from the spyshots, the prototype is already wearing LED headlights, which will be a premiere for the GT. Inside we’ll get the iDrive system with the touch-sensitive controller to play with, as well as new engines as part of the life cycle impulse (LCI).

In Europe, the changes will be more complex as the line-up is spread a lot. The 328i and 335i models will be replaced by new 330i and 340i versions, while on the diesel side of things, the 325d model will get a bump in power to 231 HP instead of the 218 HP it has at the moment.

In the US, the only available versions of the Gran Turismo are the 328i and 335i, and they too will be replaced with the new 2-liter and 3-liter mills from the B-family of plants. They are now making 252 HP in the 330i and 326 HP in the 340i.

The launch is due somewhere in 2016, most likely at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
