Affordable than any other vehicles comprising the Mercedes-Benz line-up at the time, the C-Klasse was mostly regarded as a cheaper alternative rather than an actually new and reliable car. However, perception would change soon enough thanks to the introduction of multi-valve power plants which were fitted on the C 180, C 200 and C 220. The small 4-cylinder units developed 120 hp, 134 hp and 148 respectively. However, such figures were still low compared to those achieved of the top-of-the-line C 280 which had an output of 193 hp. M111 engines, such as the ones mentioned above would be later enhanced through the introduction of a supercharger (Kompressor) on the C 230 model. The car had a power output equal to that of the C 280 but was truly special due to the fact that Mercedes-Benz had returned to supercharger technology usage after a 5-decade long break.
