100+ years since the invention of the self-propelled car, three new engines battle for a place in the automotive future. Which one do you see in your car 10 years from now?
BMW introduced the third generation 3 Series in 1991, designing it for the compact luxury car sector. Based on the all-new E36 automobile platform, the new 3 Series was initially available as a 4-door sedan (several other body configurations followed) featuring a more roundish exterior design, restyled headlamps and revised suspension. The new 3 Series sedan was larger and heavier than its previous generation model (due to more active safety features fitted into it) and benefited from a perfect 50:50 weight distribution (relocation of the engine further in the back). Its top-of-the-range 325i version was doing 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds and topped around 140 mph. This model received a minor facelift in 1997, one year before being replaced by the 4th generation 3 Series.
