BMW introduced a new generation 3 Series Coupe model in 1992. Based on company's new E36 automobile platform, the new coupe underwent a major restyling process and appeared to the large public with sleeker exterior lines and improved interior space. This model was offered with four-cylinder 318iS and six-cylinder 320i and 325i models, while an entry-level 316i was also available later that year. The all-new 2.8L engine was introduced to the 3 Series Coupe in 1995, replacing the previous 2.5L unit. The car underwent several changes in terms of new safety features and standard options throughout its 6 years of production, while also becoming the base for a second generation high-performance M model in 1993 (benefiting from a Motorsport-tuned 3.0L engine).
