Moving inside, we find even less changes. The “list” is headed by a dark-finish fuel gauge trim for the US models. If you want to talk about real updates, we’ll have to move into the infotainment area, where the 370Z gets a Bose audio system. This adds two extra speakers and a pair of subwoofers to the standard number of four speakers.
These spread out the beats pretty nice throughout the rather focused cabin of the 370Z Roadster. By the way, each time we get back in here the driving position puts a smile on our face.
You sit lower than in the 350Z and the seats offer decent support for the more agitated side of driving. They’re also decently comfortable for trips up to a medium length. Go past that point though and you’ll notice how your body constantly twitches in search of a more comfortable position. Ignore its commands and you’ll end the trip with a bit of back pain. Well, at least the seats can be had in a heated and ventilated form.
The
steering wheel is a much finer piece though. Unlike the rather useless central gauges, the wheel is sporty is a discreet sense. You can also add the excellent column ergonomics here. The paddles are fairly easy to operate and well separated from the rest of the controls.
Speaking of controls, we’re operating the roof right now and we’re not exactly thrilled. Nissan talks about the possibility to operate the cloth top at “walking speeds”. Well, in real life you’ll see the car queuing behind you as you drop the top. Of course, you can also wait before you find a spot to pull over. Annoying.
Twenty seconds may not sound like much, but they certainly feel so when the hydraulic mechanism is in action. Nissan chose this setup over an electric one as it is smoother in operation.
Right behind you, sits a luggage compartment that will turn you into a packaging expert. The 4.9 cubic feet (140 liters) say it all. The Nissan 370Z Roadster simply wasn’t made for long trips. Despite the nature of the car, we did just that. Nevertheless, the drive began somewhere inside the city. We have to say we were pretty impressed with what the 370Z Roadster did between the starting point and the border of the city.
