Yamaha YZF-R1 Banned by the Canadian Superbike

Following a recent meeting of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship Road Race Management Group, the status of Yamaha models in the 2010 National Championship significantly changed.

In a release posted on their official website, the Canadian Superbike Series announced that all 2010 model-year will no longer be allowed to participate in any of the series classes, while the Yamaha YZF-R1 model, regardless of production year, would be banned from the Pro Superbike Class. However, no such restrictions will apply to existing 600cc YZF-R6 models.

“Our biggest concern is the privateer or club level racer with existing Yamaha equipment,”
said Colin Fraser, one of the series organizers, Professional Motorsports Productions, in a release.  “The vast majority of Yamaha riders utilize 600s, and we agreed that it was in everyone’s best interests to allow these existing machines to continue to compete.”

The decision comes right after Yamaha Canada announced that they were withdrawing from the National tour, both in terms of series support and rider/team involvement. Previously, the six major manufacturers directly involved in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship contributed equally to the series structure, including support of the television broadcast package.

However, there is still hope, as organizers added that they plan reinstating Yamaha in the Feature category when the manufacturer is able to return to participate in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship Series.

The series' organizers are currently evaluating rules for the brand new Twin Sports category.  The class includes liquid cooled twins with a maximum of 75 hp on the official series Dynojet Dyno, and air-cooled machinery with a maximum of 95 hp.
