Yamaha and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are issuing the recall campaign number 14V044000. The campaign is triggered by some problems detected in the headlight bulb sockets of certain motorcycles, but no accidents or injuries have been reported at the time of writing.
In these bikes (model year described below), an incorrectly manufactured headlight bulb socket was installed. The use of the headlight may generate enough heat to cause the bulb connections to expand and arcing may result.

Arcing overheats the socket and it may melt, causing the whole headlight to malfunction and even produce a short circuit. Needless to say that riding at night and experiencing the malfunction of the bike’s headlight is a very nasty thing.

And even during the day, with a dead headlight is dangerous because motorcyclists are less visible to the other road users, let alone the fact that in many countries and states, riding without day running lights is an offense and will cause cops to hand over some fines.

The affected bikes are model year 2009-2013 Yamaha YZF-R1 manufactured between October 2008 and August 2013 and XT1200Z Super Tenere manufactured October 2011 through August 2013. The total number of recalled bikes revolve around the 24,000 mark, the NHTSA reports.

Yamaha is notifying customers and dealers will replace the faulty sockets free of charge. The recall is scheduled to debut this very month. If you’re having trouble finding whether your bike is affected, you can always reach Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926.
