Yamaha Sponsor Wants Rossi in F1

Yesterday morning, less than a day after he resigned from his position as chairman of the Italian carmaker FIAT, Ferrari's Luca di Montezemolo admitted that there is nothing he would like to see more than Rossi driving a Scuderia-prepared car in the Formula One championship.

We want a third car and I would do everything to have Valentino (Rossi). When he wins this year's MotoGP, enough is enough, he must also win in Formula One,” said the Ferrari chairman and president, while admitting that he would only push for major teams benefiting from a 3rd car in Formula One next year.

Apparently, he and chief executive of the Ferrari parent FIAT Sergio Marchionne seem to agree on the topic – Rossi's debut in F1, that is – as the latter also looks at this move as being an interesting one. Although the two major FIAT figures are hardly seeing eye to eye in recent months, as it is believed Di Montezemolo left his position within the Italian group due to disagreements with Marchionne's 5-year business plan, they both seem to want Rossi wearing the all-red racing suit in the Great Circus.

Luca says he would like to have a third Ferrari car with Valentino – it's a great idea if he (Rossi) is willing to do it,” added Marchionne in the press conference where Di Montezemolo confirmed his departure.

The reason why we're reporting this is that FIAT is Valentino Rossi's main backer in the MotoGP Series, through their official partnership with Yamaha Team. However, the 7-time MotoGP champion (and 9-time FIM world champion) will end his deal with FIAT Yamaha Team at the end of 2010, and his future prospects are still to be determined.

In recent weeks, Rossi admitted that he doesn't know what road to chose from 2011 onwards, but revealed he will make his decision by the summer of 2010.
