Xiang Dong Yu Stays in Prison

The first hearing in the case of Xiang Dong Yu, the former Ford engineer accused of stealing trade secrets concluded with the judge's decision to keep him behind bars, pending his transfer to Detroit.

The Chinese got his luggage and passport seized, with the former hiding a computer hard drive similar to one he is accused of using to steal the sensitive Ford documents. According to Autonews, Yu's return ticket to China was dated October 21. He was apprehended on October 16.

The judge ruled to keep Yu in prison after US Attorney Mary Senoo argued that Yu still had the stolen documents in his possession and has a strong determination to leave the country.

Yu on the other hand was looking to get released on bond and even went as far as asking his lawyer to present the court with a list of contributors reportedly willing to raise $50,000 for him. Additionally, he provided the court with the name of a Detroit pastor who would house him during the trail. Yu also complained he is unable to access his Chinese assets from prison.

Yu is accused of stealing trade secrets, attempted theft of trade secrets and unauthorized access to a protected computer. The Justice Department says he managed to get away with some 4,000 Ford documents, containing material related to Ford's door structures, steering wheel assembly, engine and transmission mounting subsystem and the instrument panel.

With these documents, Yu is said to have tried to get a job with several Chinese carmakers.
