World, Meet Hyundai’s Latest Alternative-Fuel Vehicle: IONIQ

According to Hyundai Motor Company officials, the IONIQ will be available with electric, plug-in gasoline/electric hybrid, or gasoline/electric hybrid powertrains. It's a world first for a vehicle to have these three powertrain options in a single body type, and the new vehicle from the Korean company is set to be an important rival for the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt.

Woong-Chul Yang, Head of Hyundai Motor R&D Center, has said that the IONIQ is the company’s vision for future mobility, with a variety of powertrains that suit customers’ lifestyles without compromising factors like design or driving enjoyment.

The car is based on an entirely new platform, made specifically for the three powertrain options. When in full electric mode, it is powered by a high-capacity and ultra-efficient lithium ion battery.

The plug-in hybrid version combines fuel and battery power, boosting the vehicle’s range and keeping emissions at the lowest levels. The hybrid utilizes both the gasoline engine and the car’s motion to charge the batteries, which then supplement the engine’s power via an electric motor.

If you are asking yourself what’s with the name, you should know that IONIQ indicates elements of its creation. Ion is linked to the car’s smart combination of powertrains, while the second part of the name refers to the unique offering it brings to the current Hyundai range. The Q is a visual breakthrough, confirming the new approach of this low-emission model.

This isn’t the first time Hyundai uses the IONIQ name. In 2012, it released the first details on a concept that featured a smaller gasoline engine and an electric motor.

The global launch of the IONIQ is set for January 2016 in Korea, followed by the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show and the New York Auto Show, both in March of next year. This will be an important step for Hyundai, as its primary objective is to become the global green car market leader.
