Woman Drowns While Driving and Talking on the Phone

If there was any need for yet another proof that talking on the phone while driving can kill you, than this is it. 47-year old Kathleen Gomez Collier drove her Ford Expedition right into the Sacramento River while asking for directions from her daughter over the phone.

It all went down on Saturday, after the woman lost her way on Highway 160. Trying to get back to Antioch, the woman first stopped at Vieira's Resort to ask for directions but, unhappy with the answers she received, decided to call her daughter and ask for help.

It's unclear what the daughter told her. For unclear reasons, the woman drove onto the boat ramp at the resort and, according to officer Michael Bradley from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), drove into the water.

Bradley however told sfgate.com that the woman paused for a moment before driving into the river. The woman apparently told her daughter to call the insurance company, while the car was filling up with water. CHP was then called to the scene by Collier's daughter.

Divers were sent to the scene and recovered the body on Sunday, some 175 feet downstream from where she drove into the river. Police suspects the woman was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the only explanations to her erratic behavior. The fact that she was on the phone also enhanced her confusion.

The investigators also found that the Vieira's Resort has video cameras and they are now looking through the footage in an attempt to learn more.
