Willis to Join Force India - Report

Geoff Willis may emerge as the new technical director of Force India Mercedes. While an announcement on such a move is still pending, it is believed the 50-year-old Briton is already one foot outside Hispania Racing F1 Team's boat, following his outspoken criticism of the Dallara chassis used by the Spanish team for the 2010 season of Formula One.

Following the recent Malaysian Grand Prix, most of the people down in the HRT F1 garage hailed the team's first double finish in F1, after only 3 races of experience – with both Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna crossing the finish line. Nevertheless, at least one man was not happy with the idea of being in the seventh heaven for finishing a race some 3 laps down, namely Willis.

After expressing his disappointment over the Dallara chassis out in the public – admitting that he doesn't see any reason for being optimistic about further improvements of the HRT F1 package – several publications revealed Willis has already been approached by Force India for the remainder of the season.

The Indian outfit has just lost technical director James Key to BMW Sauber-Ferrari in recent months, following Willy Rampf's departure from the Hinwil based team. Key's role with Force India has been taken by former design director Mark Smith in February.

On Sunday, Willis confirmed he will make his definitive decision after the Chinese Grand Prix, scheduled two weekends from now. However, several media reported his departure from HRT F1 is imminent.

Willis' experience in Formula One is highly valued, as he used to work for teams like Williams, McLaren and Honda (as a technical boss or aerodynamicist), until landing a job with Red Bull Racing in 2007. In the summer of last year, the Brit decided to part ways with the Milton Keynes based team, with the reasons undisclosed at the time.
