Willie G. Davidson to Get 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award

Excellence in automotive design is always each year with an EyesOn Design Lifetime Achievement Award and this time, the lucky winner of the prestigious prize is no one else than the talented Willie G. Davidson, Senior Vice President and Chief Styling Officer at Harley-Davidson Motor Company.

According to cardesignnews.com, Willie G. Davidson was chosen by the industry's top designers and award winners from previous years to be handed one of the most wanted awards in the automotive design area. This year's EyesOn Design Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. Davidson is going to accept the award during the EyesOn Design 2009 weekend events that will take place in Detroit, June 19-21 2009.

Other designers that have been given the same award in the past are Sergio Pininfarina, Harley Earl, Nuccio Bertone, Raymond Loewy, Bruno Sacco, Giorgetto Giugiaro, Tom Gale, Chuck Pelly, Chuck Jordan, Jack Telnack and Marcello Gandini.

This year, Willie G. Davidson, the grandson of one of the original founders of Harley-Davidson, added another name to the list. He was interested in design ever since he has been a student in Wisconsin where he was studying graphic art. Pushed by his passion for design, Davidon attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California. After graduation, he worked for at Brook Stevens Associates where he designed various products including furniture and outboard motors.

Although he has been employed by major car companies including Ford, Davidson's passion for motorcycles prevailed, so he began designing motorbikes as a hobby. In 1963, Davidson joined the design department at Harley-Davidson where he had the chance to design the Super Glide, Low Rider and Fat Boy.
