We love racing and we’re crazy about engines taken to a whole new level of performance. But when you turn a lake into a race track that's when things get really interesting. The latest video uploaded on GoPro’s Youtube account takes a good look at what a 3,000 horsepower hydroboat is.
As part of their commercial series to promote the company’s camera, the Hero3+, GoPro has released a new video that takes fans all over the world in the middle of a boat race. Dubbed H1 Unlimited Hydroplanes, the footage is built on the best angles a camera can get out a dozen of monster vessels.

The video has underwater shots of one of the boat’s prop starting, turbines going wild and even some small crashes. As you’d imagine, these boats are far from being normal. The modern Unlimited Hydroplane is the world’s fastest race boat, capable of speeds over 200 mph. These monsters are powered by a 3,000 horsepower Lycorning T-55 L-7 military Chinook helicopter turbine engine.

Safety measures

You have to be quite courageous to actually drive one of these Hydroplanes, especially that they are known to be extremely risky. In the early days of hydroplane racing, accidents, and even the deaths of drivers, were considered somewhat routine. As top sopeeds increased, more attention was paid to driver safety, much like with NASCAR auto racing and GP Circuit motorcycle racing driver safety programs today.

This is why, modern safety technologies such as fiber re-enforced Kevlar cockpits, capsule-enclosed driver modules with improved safety harness systems and advanced ballistic impact-resistant suits significantly improved the racing conditions.
