Three years ago, boutique automaker VUHL presented the 05 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. At this year’s edition of the world famous hill climb, the Mexican outfit brought out the 05RR. And yes, this little bruiser is entitled to wear license plates.
According to VUHL, you’re in the presence of the “ultimate road-legal track car.” The question is, does the VUHL 05RR has what it takes to thrill on and off the public road? The answer to that is yes, definitely yes. Although it doesn’t look like it, the open-top two-seat sports car packs a massive punch: 600 BHP-per-tonne, also known as more than the Bugatti Veyron, McLaren P1, and the white-knuckle Ferrari F12tdf.

Compared to the regular model, which boasts 285 horsepower from its EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder, the 05RR turns things up to 385 horsepower. All that get-up-and-go is sent to ultra-lightweight carbon fiber rear wheels shod in sticky Michelin Cup 2 tires. The dry weight? 640 kilograms or 1,410 lbs.

The sole tranny available for the VUHL 05RR is a six-speed sequential that enables the car to accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.7 seconds. The 05RR will keep on accelerating to 160 mph (257 km/h). That’s 5 mph (9 km/h) short on the 2016 Ford Focus RS, a hot hatch that’s also powered by the 2.3-liter EcoBoost.

Jordan King, the reserve driver for the Manor Racing F1 team, is chuffed to bits about the VUHL 05RR: “There’s usually a big difference between what people consider a supercar and what is a proper racing car. I’m really excited to drive the VUHL 05RR because it has the perfect recipe: lightweight to the core, huge power-to-weight, and it looks incredible. Goodwood is going to be a tonne of fun.”

It's not known if VUHL will offer the 05RR Stateside, but we have alternatives. Off the top of my head, the Ariel Atom is readily available. In 2017, the KTM X-Bow will also go on sale in the U.S. as a turn-key offering.
