Volkswagen’s passenger car sales in the US grew an unexpected 63.5%, making this the best August since 1973, with 41,011 units sold. 2012 has so far been the best year since 1973, with 37% growth.
Despite not being a new model, the Passat had its best August, 10,090 of these sedans being sold. Meanwhile, the Jetta came close to topping its 2002 record with 13,377 units.

Clean diesel TDI models accounted for 21.4% of all VW sales in August, signaling a new trend for the high-mileage segment of the market.

“Delivering over 40,000 vehicles this month is another milestone for us as we continue to see customer demand grow for our products,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “With 24 consecutive months of year-on-year growth, we are demonstrating that we are making the right investments, creating a solid infrastructure and are delivering safe, high-quality and competitive products.”
