March was an unexpectedly warm month for Volkswagen's auto sales in the US. The company registered 37,704 units delivered, representing an 3.1 percent increase versus the prior year. These figures contributed to record year-to-date results of 98,178 units delivered, up 4.0 percent vs. 2012, the best since 1973.
The top performer for VW continued to be the Jetta sedan, with 12,872 deliveries. Demand for the Beetle (coupe and convertible combined) grew 107% to 4,082 units in March and just over 10,000 for the year to date.
The Passat and Tiguan were also up, but total sales of the Golf (including Golf R and GTI) were down 21%.
“Last month marked our 31st consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases and our strongest March in 40 years,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “While we are cautious in terms of economic outlook, we expect to see continued growth at a moderate pace in the months ahead.”
