Vettel Goes for Schumacher, Ascari Records in F1

Sebastian Vettel and his Red Bull RB7 look unbeatable this season start, as the reigning world champion scored consecutive pole positions and race wins in Australia and Malaysia. And considering that many argue Red Bull is still not showing their true pace in the series, one might be inclined to believe the streak might go on for a great deal of time.

Vettel had also clinched the last two races of 2010, the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix, which means the 23-year old German is undefeated in Formula 1 for the past 4 races. And you all know what that means. It's time to think about setting some records, and the closest one at hand would be to become the first driver in the history of F1 to take 8 consecutive wins in the series.

So far, only two drivers have scored 7 consecutive wins in F1, both for Ferrari. The most recent example is Michael Schumacher, who during his successful stay at Maranello entered the history books by winning 7 grands prix in a row between the months of May and August, in 2004.

Alberto Ascari was the other driver to score 7 in a row for Ferrari, only that performance dates back to almost 6 decades ago, in the 1952/53 F1 season (last race of 1952 and the first 6 races of 1953).

After telling the media that he is currently enjoying the perfect start of an F1 season in career, Vettel was asked by Germany's Bild newspaper is his mind is set on breaking those consecutive-win records in the Great Circus.

Really? Only seven?” was the 23-year old's reaction, suggesting that he has every intention of going for 8 in 2011.

Until then however, Vettel will have to reach 5 wins in a row this weekend, in China, the venue where he scored his first F1 victory for Red Bull a couple of years back. So far, no drivers in Formula 1 has won the Chinese Grand Prix two times, since the event's entrance in the series back in 2004.
