One day after clinching his 100th win inside the MotoGP, Valentino Rossi is still making the headlines of all major motorsport publications Europe-wide. The latest rumor that surfaced to the media this weekend is that the 5-time MotoGP champion is considering making a Formula One switch for Scuderia Ferrari in 2010.
Although the Italian rider is still under contract with Japanese bike manufacturer Yamaha until the end of 2010, he admitted there is still a slight chance he can switch to 4-wheel drive. First of all, F1 would have to allow its manufacturers to field a 3rd car in the series, and secondly, he'd have to fit his potential F1 campaign into his MotoGP schedule.
Following Max Mosley's meeting with FOM boss Bernie Ecclestone and FOTA CEO and Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo last Wednesday, it has emerged that part of the peace offer between the FOTA and the FIA was the manufacturers being ready to field a 3rd car next year. However, no official confirmation was made public by either of the two parties during the past week.
While showing his enthusiasm on the matter, Rossi insisted that his main focus is now with his MotoGP career. However, he did leave the door open for a future switch to F1 in the years to come. The Yamaha rider tested for the Scuderia in recent years, during the team's off-season testing sessions.
"In 2010 I have a contract with Yamaha so it would be difficult or even impossible. What's more, Ferrari do not have a third car and I have taken no decision about changing sport," revealed Rossi. However, when hearing Ferrari could field a 3rd car next year, he admitted: "I am quite happy about it, it could happen in 2011 - why not?"
