UPS Leases 92 Electric Trucks from ZAP

As the holiday season is coming, the delivery guys get more and more busy. For the third year in a row, UPS Australia leased a fleet of electric trucks in order to make deliveries to the urban and residential communities in the bay area.

According to UPS, the electric trucks are more efficient than the larger internal combustion ones, especially where congestion and parking restriction are present. The fuel is also used more efficiently, as the electric truck stops consuming when the car doesn’t move. The delivery company is so happy with these trucks that it has been renting 92 electric trucks from ZAP since 2007.

"UPS operates the largest fleet of delivery vehicles in the world and their continued use of ZAP's 100% electric vehicles demonstrates a commitment to reduce emissions and serves as a model for other fleet operators to follow," said ZAP CEO Steve Schneider. "Their deployment of alternative fuel vehicles parallels the deliveries that we've already made to the US government and military."

The electric trucks have an estimated fuel efficiency of 100 MPGe which means an important reduction of the operational costs for a business like UPS'. They also have direct drive transmission and fewer moving parts as compared to an internal combustion vehicle, which means that less maintenance is needed, so the costs are smaller.

ZAP, which started a business based on fleet applications for electric vehicles, says that the long collaboration with UPS just goes to show that such a solution can bring important benefits.
