Since Toyota is in the battle for the title of the world’s No. One automotive producer, the company must also play in the eco field and so far, the carmaker has placed all its eggs in the hybrid basket. However, it seems that all this is about to change, with the company set to divert its efforts to develop downsized engines, as The Detroit Bureau writes.
Toyota is reportedly working together with its motorsport arm, Gazoo Racing, to develop four-cylinder unit that uses turbocharging and direct injection. Such a development would trade a part of the efficiency advantage for lower development costs and an image boost.
The future poweplant could be used for a wide array of models, with the vehicles ranging in size. The powerplant could debut on the Japanese Domestic Market in 2013.
