Toyota Tacoma San Antonio Production Kicks Off

Well, sort of. Production of Toyota's Tacoma at the new line at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) actually began last month, but it was only this weekend when Toyota decided to hold a special ceremony to celebrate the debutof the production.

The new line which will produce the Tacoma is said to have swallowed $100 million of Toyota's money, bringing the total sum invested in the San Antonio plant to $1.4 billion. An outcome which, back in the not-so-distant days when the bad economic situation was threatening the plant's operations, not many hoped to see happening.

“The San Antonio plant has shown a great deal of resilience during the recession and is fully prepared to ramp-up Tacoma production,” Chris Nielsen, TMMTX president said in a statement.

“By building Tacoma in Texas, we are able to consolidate pickup truck production in the United States under one roof, allowing us to fully utilize the plant’s capacity.”

The Tacoma, model year 2011, is priced from $16,365 for the Regular Cab 4x2 equipped with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission. The pick-up is being offered with two engines, 2.7l DOHC four-cylinder (159 horsepower) and a 4.0l DOHC V6 (236 horsepower).

The body versions and traction configurations are Access Cab 4x2 PreRunner, Double Cab 4x2, Double Cab 4x2 PreRunner, Regular Cab 4x4, and Access Cab 4x4. The pick-up is equipped with ABS, EBD, BA, VSC, TRAC and Automatic Limited-slip Differential (Auto-LSD).

Aside for the San Antonio facility, production of the new model will be handled at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Baja California (TMMBC) and in Mexico.
